Wrist Pain From Repetitive Shift Work: Causes and Fixes

Shiftat-E Blog

Wrist pain is one of the most common complaints in shift work. Any repetitive hand task โ€” packing orders, stitching, using shears and tools, stocking shelves, or typing for hours โ€” drives the same tendons and nerves through the same motion hundreds of times a day. The result is burning, numbness, or a weaker grip.

Why repetitive work overloads the wrist

Tendons pass through narrow tunnels at the wrist. Repeat the same motion without a break and they swell, rubbing against their sheaths. That friction is what drives inflammation and pain.

Carpal tunnel compression is a specific version: the median nerve runs through a tight channel at the base of the palm, and swollen tendons press on it. You feel tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, often worse at night.

Vibration makes it worse. Impact drivers, powered screwdrivers, and drills send constant vibration into the hand, tiring the small nerves in the fingers over time.

Posture is the cause many people miss. Bend your wrist up or down while working and pressure inside the tunnel multiplies. A neutral wrist โ€” straight with the forearm โ€” is the least stressful position for the joint.

Signs you should take seriously

If numbness is constant or your hand feels heavy, do not wait. See a doctor or physiotherapist so they can assess the nerves and give you a plan that fits.

A simple mid-shift stretch routine

These take under two minutes. Do them roughly every two hours:

Never stretch into sharp pain. If a stretch hurts, stop and rest the hand.

Keyboard and desk setup that helps

Most office and accounts wrist pain starts at the desk. Fix these details:

When to see a doctor or physiotherapist

Book an appointment if pain lasts more than two weeks, if night tingling disturbs your sleep, or if your grip is clearly weaker. Early assessment changes the outcome, and some cases need a wrist splint or a course of physiotherapy.
