Weight Gain from Shift Work: How to Take Control

Shiftat-E Blog

Weight creeping up after you moved to shift work is common, and it is rarely about willpower. Rotating rosters change when you eat, how you sleep and how much you move. Here is what is actually happening, and what to do about it.

Why shift work adds weight

The first reason is meal timing. Eating at 3am is not what your body expects, and digestion runs slower at night.

The second is short sleep. A sleep deficit raises hunger signals and lowers the ones that tell you to stop, so you crave sugar and carbs the next day.

The third is movement. After a long shift in Gulf heat, walking or training is the last thing on your mind, so your daily burn drops without you noticing.

The late-night eating trap

Many shift workers eat their main meal at the end of the shift, then sleep right after. That pattern tends to add weight and leave you bloated over time.

Try moving your main meal to about two hours before the shift starts, and keep the end of the night light โ€” yoghurt, fruit or a small snack.

Moving in a hot climate

In Kuwait and across the Gulf, walking outdoors at midday is unrealistic for much of the year. Move your walk to the cooler hours โ€” after sunset or before a morning shift โ€” and even 20 minutes counts.

It does not have to be a gym session. Stairs instead of the lift, a short walk between tasks, and standing up during long stretches all add up.

If your role is desk-based, stand and move for two minutes every hour. Small and boring, but it works.

Protect your sleep, protect your weight

Sleep is part of the plan, not a separate issue. With enough sleep, appetite settles and the pull toward sugar gets weaker.

Do that for a week and you notice how much less you snack.

A simple starting plan

You do not need a strict diet. Start with three things: a main meal before your shift, water all night, and a 20-minute walk three times a week.

Knowing which days you eat out is half the battle, which is where tracking helps. Shiftat-E lets you log your shifts, your hours and plan your leave, so you see your routine instead of guessing.

The app is early in its release and improving through user feedback. And these are general tips โ€” if you have a medical condition or take medication, check with your doctor or a dietitian.

Start this week

Choose one habit and repeat it for seven days before adding another. Shiftat-E is a simple way to see your month clearly and plan the days that usually go wrong.
