Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday: Which Weekend Is Yours?

Shiftat-E Blog

Ask ten people in Kuwait what the weekend is and most will say Friday and Saturday. Ask a friend who works for a private company that follows its head office schedule and you may hear something else: Saturday and Sunday. Both pairs exist, and which one you get depends on your employer, not on the country. The moment your pair stops matching everyone else's, the usual advice to "plan your weekend" stops being useful.

Step one: confirm your pair, not your colleague's

Do not go by what you have always assumed or what a teammate told you in the corridor. Check your contract, the HR circular, or this month's roster and see which two days are actually marked off. Then write them somewhere you look at daily. Why bother? Because the pair can move during Ramadan, peak season, or a change in management, and if you are running on an old memory you will book things on days you are supposed to be at work.

Saturday is the one day you still share

Both pairs include Saturday. Whether you are on Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday, Saturday is off for you. That makes it the only day you can reliably meet a brother on the other pair, or a friend on a government schedule. Treat it as a standing appointment โ€” a family lunch, a coffee, anything โ€” rather than a "we'll see". A shared day that is not booked early gets booked by laundry, errands and sleep.

When your day off is everyone's workday

Here is the advantage almost nobody uses. A day off that lands midweek is the best slot for anything that needs an office: paperwork, a hospital appointment, a renewal, the bank. Queues are shorter and traffic is lighter. Just do not leave the day empty โ€” give it one substantial task and let the rest be actual rest.

Family, school, and the empty house

The school week is not your week. If your children are in school and your spouse is on the other pair, some of your days off will be days when the house is empty. That is fine when it is planned and frustrating when it is not. Agree on who drops off, who picks up, and who handles the shopping, and write it next to the roster instead of keeping it in your head.

This is where a clear month beats guesswork. When you log your shifts, your hours, and plan your leave in Shiftat-E, you see the whole month at once, you spot the week where you only get one shared day, and you can book leave that lands on a real weekend instead of burning days you did not need. One last thing: speak plainly with your family. "I am off on Saturday" lands better than "hopefully we'll meet", and when you book leave, attach it to the shared day so you get full days with them instead of scattered fragments.

If your weekend does not look like everyone else's, stop trying to match theirs and plan around your real roster. Get Shiftat-E here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.q8dm.shiftate
