A Weekly Hydration Plan for Shift Workers in Kuwait

Shiftat-E Blog

Drinking enough water is harder than it sounds on shifts. In Kuwait, summer heat outside and dry air conditioning inside pull water from your body before you feel thirsty. A fixed weekly hydration plan keeps your intake steady no matter which shift you are on.

How much water you actually need

Guidelines suggest 30 to 35 millilitres per kilogram of body weight, roughly 2 to 3 litres a day for most adults. Shift work pushes you toward the higher end.

Do not rely on thirst. On long or night shifts that signal lags behind what your body needs.

Water by shift type

Your need changes with shift length and timing. Spread it across the shift instead of catching up at the end of the day.

Consistency matters more than volume. Sipping steadily beats one large amount at once.

Water vs coffee and energy drinks

Coffee and energy drinks are part of night shift reality, but they do not replace water. Caffeine increases fluid loss slightly, and sugary soft drinks add calories without real hydration.

Set a simple rule: for every cup of coffee, drink a cup of water. Cap yourself at two or three coffees per shift and stop about six hours before you sleep, so your daytime rest is not disturbed. Energy drinks are no substitute for water, and drinking them late makes falling asleep in the morning harder.

How to actually drink enough

Good intentions fail on a busy shift. Tie drinking to events that already happen in your day and it becomes automatic.

You can also record your shifts and hours in Shiftat-E to see which week was toughest and adjust your plan. That record shows how long stretches of work line up with what you actually drank.

Start your plan this week

Write your week down: how many shifts, which type, and the average hours. Set a water target for each shift, then check the result at the end of the week and adjust. With Shiftat-E you can track your shifts and hours and plan your leave in advance, which makes the routine easier to organise.
