Tracking Hours When You Change Workplaces: Start a Clean Log on Day One

Shiftat-E Blog

Changing workplaces is one of the few moments when your hours record quietly breaks. The old notebook, the old app, the old site's roster โ€” none of it moves with you. And the first month at a new job is exactly when you are least likely to write anything down, because you are busy learning names, gates, and where the coffee is.

Why your hours history splits

Your previous employer keeps their own record, and it serves them, not your memory. If you ever need to show what you actually worked โ€” a leave balance question, a shift that was never counted, an end-of-service conversation โ€” you need your own copy in your own hands.

So before you hand back the badge, save your last full month: the shifts, total hours, overtime, and start and end times as they really happened. Then open a clean page for the new job. Do not keep adding to the old log as if nothing changed. The patterns and shift lengths differ, and mixing them makes the record hard to trust.

Start a fresh log on day one

Day one means day one, not the last Thursday of the month. Write down:

If you keep your log in Shiftat-E, create new entries for the new workplace instead of writing over the old ones. Those numbers are still yours.

Re-baseline overtime, and read probation carefully

What counted as overtime at the old job may not count at the new one. Some start counting after eight hours, some after nine, some across the month. In your first week, ask one clear question: when does overtime start here? Get the answer in writing if you can.

Probation has its own arithmetic. Attendance expectations differ, and hours sometimes land differently while your evaluation is still open. Do not assume the old rules travelled with you. Log everything, and if policy is involved, check your contract and HR.

Mistakes that cost money, and a first-week checklist

Two mistakes come up again and again: relying on a manager's spreadsheet, and not writing down shift swaps. A spreadsheet can be edited, replaced, or lost in a handover; a verbal swap leaves no trace. Record the swap the same day: with whom, which date, and what replaced what.

Be careful with the fingerprint machine too. It records arrival and departure, not the twelve-hour shift with no real break, and not the day you spent at another site.

This is where Shiftat-E earns its place: you log shifts and hours and plan leave in one place, so a new workplace starts with a clean record instead of a blank memory.

Moving sites does not have to mean losing track. Download Shiftat-E from Google Play, then log your shifts and hours and plan your leave from your first day on the new roster.
