Swollen Legs and Feet After a Long Standing Shift

Shiftat-E Blog

If you spend ten or twelve hours a shift on your feet — a shop floor, a kitchen, a ward, a security gate — you know the feeling by hour eight: shoes suddenly tight, ankles gone, a deep line pressed into the skin by your sock. It is uncomfortable, it is very common, and most of the time it is not dangerous. Here is what is happening and what actually helps.

Why fluid pools in your lower legs

Blood has to climb back up from your feet to your heart, and there is no pump down there. It depends on the calf muscles squeezing the veins with every step, and on one-way valves that stop blood sliding back down. Stand still for hours and that calf pump goes quiet. Gravity keeps pulling fluid down, pressure builds in the small veins, and some plasma leaks into the tissue around the ankle. That is the puffiness.

Three things make it worse: heat, which widens the veins (Kuwait summers and hot kitchens do this well); salt, which makes your body hold on to water; and standing locked in one position with straight knees.

What helps during the shift

What helps after the shift

Lie on your back with your legs up a wall for 10 to 15 minutes, hips close to the wall. Gravity drains the fluid back toward your body. A cool — not ice cold — rinse over your feet and ankles calms the skin, and a short walk afterwards does more for swollen ankles than sitting still.

Swelling usually eases overnight, with your legs finally level with your heart. If it does not, act on it.

Keep a record of the long weeks

You cannot shorten a shift that is already rostered, but you can see the pattern. Many shift workers use Shiftat-E to log shifts, hours, overtime and planned leave, so a heavy month is visible instead of remembered. That is all it does — it does not track your health.

When to go get checked

See a doctor the same day if you notice any of these:

This article is general information, not a diagnosis. If something feels wrong, go get checked — that is always the right call.

Small habits, lighter legs

Break up the standing, keep the calf pump working, and give your legs fifteen minutes of drainage at home. When the hours keep climbing, Shiftat-E on Google Play helps you keep them straight.
