The first week of nights is the hardest week in any shift job, and not because the work is hard โ it is usually quieter than days. What is hard is that your body objects: drowsy at 3 AM, awake at 11 AM full of sleep and headache at once, eating random.
The good news: you only have to survive this week once, if you do it with a plan instead of by accident. Here is that plan.
The biggest mistake is deciding to go to bed at 9 PM the night before your first night shift. You will lie there for two hours, get irritated, and wake up late and tired. Better: sleep at your normal time, get up normally in the morning, and take a one to two hour nap in the early afternoon before the shift.
The goal is not to "become a night person" on day one. The goal is to arrive at the first shift not already destroyed.
Sleepiness on a first night comes in waves, not as a straight line. A wave passes in about fifteen minutes. So instead of fighting it with sugar and a wall of coffee:
When you get home, do not sit down with your phone. The first three hours are your deepest sleep, and they do not come back. A simple routine:
Do not sleep more than about seven and a half hours. Oversleeping in the day leaves you groggy at night.
On day three you feel adapted, so you stay up after the shift, eat a heavy meal, and cut your sleep. Then night four destroys you. Do not do it. Keep the routine even when you feel fine.
This is where seeing your schedule matters: log your shifts and hours with Shiftat-E and keep the five nights written down. When you can see three nights remain, decisions improve โ "I'm not staying up tonight, tomorrow is night four" is much easier when it is on a screen in front of you.
The last night decides how the following days feel. Do not sleep a full long block afterwards, or you will wake in the evening and spend the day wrecked. Sleep four to five hours, get up, get daylight, let yourself wake naturally, then sleep at your normal night time.
Ordinary drowsiness is expected. These are different:
If those persist beyond two weeks, it is not a lack of toughness โ it is worth seeing a doctor.
