Your first week of night shifts is unlike any other. Your body has spent its whole life sleeping at night and waking in daylight โ now you're asking it to flip. That's why the first week is always the hardest: broken sleep, meals at odd hours, and the feeling you live in a different time zone from everyone else. With a simple plan that starts before your first night, you can get through it in one piece.
Don't wait for the first night to change your sleep โ your body won't flip its schedule at the press of a button. If you know your roster in advance, start three days early:
For the first week you'll be sleeping by day, and daytime sleep is harder than nighttime sleep: the sun is up, the house is awake, and in Kuwait the heat shows no mercy. Your bedroom has to be the opposite of the outside world:
Your body doesn't run on the same rhythm at night, so your meals need fixed timing, not luck: eat a light, balanced meal mid-shift with healthy snacks instead of sugar rushes that spike and crash. As for coffee and tea: make your last cup five to six hours before the shift ends. Drink caffeine late in your shift and you'll get home exhausted โ but unable to sleep. In the first week, every sleep hour counts.
Your body sets its clock by light, so use it in your favor. Keep lighting strong in the early hours of the shift to stay alert, then dim it as much as you can near the end. And when you finish at dawn, wear sunglasses on the way home โ morning sunlight tells your body it's time to wake and can wreck your daytime sleep before it starts.
In a busy Kuwaiti household, family life runs in daylight while you run at night โ so you need an agreement, not assumptions. Set a fixed call time that works for you, make your sleep hours clear so nobody wakes you by accident, and keep your rest day for family instead of sleeping it away. Meanwhile, first-week night shifts blur together fast, so log each shift and its hours from the first night. Shiftat-E lets you record your shifts and hours, plan your leave, and see your whole week at a glance โ that way you know when to take your recovery day after the last night instead of guessing. The first week is hard enough; let the app handle the paperwork.
