Water and Electrolytes on Summer Shifts: A Practical Guide for Kuwait Heat

Shiftat-E Blog

What 45-50°C Does to You During a Shift

Between July and August, temperatures in Kuwait climb to 45°C and edge toward 50°C, and the humidity makes it worse. If you work an 8 or 12 hour shift in that heat — a warehouse, a fuel station, the airport, or driving between sites — your body keeps losing water and salts through sweat the entire time.

Thirst arrives late. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already behind on fluids. And if you drink plain water only, with no salts, you can still end up dizzy and drained, because you replaced the water but not what you lost with it.

What "Electrolytes" Actually Means in Everyday Food

You do not need expensive sports drinks or supplements. Electrolytes are simply minerals — sodium, potassium, magnesium — and they are already in food you have at home:

How Much to Drink Over 8-12 Hours

There is no single number that fits everyone, because it depends on your weight, how much you sweat, and the type of work. As a general rule: drink a small cup every 20 to 30 minutes through the shift, and keep a bottle with you instead of waiting for a break to drink. If you sweat heavily, add a glass of labneh drink or coconut water once or twice per shift.

Also watch your urine colour: pale means you are fine, dark means you are running short. It is the easiest signal to follow, and it needs no maths.

Warning Signs and What to Avoid

Watch for dizziness when you stand up quickly, cramps in your calves, a headache that will not quit, unusual tiredness, or a feeling that your heart is racing. If any of that happens, get out of the heat, sip slowly, and put your legs up if you can. If it continues, or you have a chronic condition or blood pressure issues, see a doctor.

And avoid: energy drinks, because the sugar and caffeine push more fluid loss; heavy coffee on an empty stomach; and fizzy drinks as a replacement for water. Coffee is not the enemy — it just cannot be your only fluid.

With Shiftat-E you log your shifts and your hours, so you know exactly how many long outdoor shifts you have this month and can plan your leave before exhaustion arrives instead of after.

Your body handles heat better when you are rested and organised. Start with a water bottle and a pinch of salt, and watch the difference within a week.
