Your roster is published for the month, but school is not that polite. Sports day gets moved, a teacher asks for an early pickup, exams start at a different hour. Parents on shifts rarely fail because they do not care. They fail because two calendars live in two different places, and the clash only shows up at the school gate.
Every school day has three anchors: the drop-off time, the pickup time, and the block you must sleep. Your shift either sits between them or collides with one. Write the three times down for each child separately, because a grade 1 child and a grade 6 child rarely share the same gate time or the same bus.
Once those four lines exist on paper, judging whether a shift works takes seconds instead of a phone call from the car park.
Take the published roster and mark each day twice: are you free at drop-off, and are you free at pickup. Days where both are clear need no planning at all. Days with one red mark need a swap, a relative, or a bus arrangement arranged in advance.
Most employers will move a shift if you ask early and offer a swap rather than a favour. The mistake is agreeing to a last-minute change while you are driving, with nothing in front of you. Keep the week visible on your phone so you can answer with facts.
Schools change everything at once in exam weeks and the last two weeks of term: early dismissal, study leave, no bus, and a child at home by noon. If you can, spend annual leave there rather than in a random quiet week. Book those dates first, before the rest of the year fills up.
The first week of term deserves the same treatment. New timings, paperwork, heavy traffic, and a child who needs longer in the morning. If you can be off, be off.
A plan built on memory drifts within two weeks. Note the shift you worked, the hours it took, and the leave days you booked, so that at the end of the month you can see where the clashes really came from instead of guessing.
Shiftat-E is a simple Android app for shift workers in Kuwait that does exactly that: logging shifts, logging hours, planning leave dates, and viewing monthly hours. It is still in its launch phase and evolving with user feedback, so what you see today keeps improving.
One minute at the end of each shift is enough. By the time the school sends next term's calendar, you will already know which weeks are tight.
If the school calendar and the roster keep fighting for room in your head, give them one place to meet. Download Shiftat-E from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.q8dm.shiftate
