Shift Work and Kuwait's Summer: Surviving 50°C Days

Shiftat-E Blog

Summer in Kuwait is not a normal summer. From June to September, daytime temperatures push past 50°C, humidity climbs near the coast, and being outdoors in the middle of the day is genuinely dangerous.

If you work shifts, in nursing, airport ground crew, oil and gas, security, retail or restaurants, the season changes how you plan everything.

What the heat actually does to a shift

Heat is not just uncomfortable. It drains you faster, slows your reactions, and makes the last two hours of a shift much harder than the first two.

That is why outdoor work in the hottest midday hours is restricted in Kuwait. Exact timings and rules vary by season and by employer, so confirm your own schedule with your company or HR.

Midday hours and the work ban

In general terms, outdoor work is banned during the peak midday window in the hottest summer months, with exceptions for essential work.

Compressed schedules and night shifts take over much of the heavy work. If your rota moves later in summer, that is normal, not a punishment.

Night shifts in a Kuwaiti summer

Night shifts are cooler, but they are not easy. Your body clock fights the change, and sleeping through the day while the sun is up is hard.

Keep your room dark and cool, and try to hold the same sleep window on your days off. Switching back and forth every few days is what really hurts.

Hydration and the air-conditioned office

Outdoors you already know to drink water. Indoors the story is different: strong air conditioning in site offices and control rooms dries you out without you noticing.

Keep water on your desk, drink through the shift, and do not wait until you feel thirsty before you reach for it.

Planning summer leave and shifts

Summer is also when leave requests pile up. If you do not plan early, you end up holding the shifts nobody wants.

Shiftat-E helps you log your shifts, your hours, and plan your leave, so the summer rota does not catch you off guard.

Write your leave dates down early and check them against the published rota before you commit to anything.

Stay cool out there
