Shift Work and Caring for Elderly Parents in Kuwait

Shiftat-E Blog

If your father takes his blood pressure pill at 8 a.m. and your shift starts at 7, the day begins before it begins. In Kuwait, looking after elderly parents is not a side task you fit in when things calm down. Shift work does not remove that duty โ€” it just makes the logistics tighter.

Family duty is not the hard part

Nobody here needs convincing that parents come first. The difficult part is the schedule. A rotating roster does not know that your mother has a cardiology appointment on Tuesday morning, or that your father should not be left alone the first night after a procedure.

So treat it like a work problem, not an emotional one. Guilt does not move a shift. A plan does.

Split the care with your siblings on paper

In most Kuwaiti families the care is shared, but it is shared informally โ€” whoever is free does it. That works until it stops working, and usually the person on shifts ends up feeling guilty for every day they miss.

A written split is not cold. It is what prevents the quiet resentment that builds between brothers and sisters.

Doctor days need planning against your rota

Appointments are the hardest thing to absorb, because they run on someone else's clock. Two habits help: book as far ahead as the clinic allows, and check your roster before you confirm the date.

If the clinic offers you a morning slot and you are on a night shift that ends at 7, do not accept it and hope. Ask for the afternoon clinic, or swap that block with a colleague early โ€” not the night before.

Keep one small care file

You will not remember the dosage of four medicines at 2 a.m. from memory. Keep a simple file โ€” a paper sheet in the hallway or a note on your phone โ€” with the diagnosis, the medicines and their times, the doctor's number, the hospital file number, and the two relatives to call first.

This is also where the app helps. Shiftat-E lets you record your shifts and hours and plan your leave, so when the family asks who can take your mother on Thursday, you are reading a real schedule instead of guessing.

Night shifts, phone calls and your own sleep

On nights you are awake while the house sleeps, and asleep while the house needs you. Being reachable matters, but so does sleep.

Tell your family your exact sleep window โ€” "I sleep from 9 to 3, call me only if it is serious" โ€” and keep the ringer loud for the two numbers that matter. Then sleep. A tired caregiver makes mistakes with medicines and loses patience with the person they love most.

If a hospital stay is coming, request leave early instead of burning emergency days one at a time. Planned leave protects your job and your parent at the same time.

You cannot be in two places, but you can stop carrying the whole schedule in your head. Get Shiftat-E on Google Play โ€” track your shifts and plan your leave before the family needs an answer.
