Seasonal Peaks on Shift Rosters

Shiftat-E Blog

Every roster has weeks that are heavier than the rest. In Kuwait those weeks are predictable, and knowing them in advance is the difference between a manageable peak and a month you spend recovering. Peak season is not a surprise; it is a date on the calendar.

When the peaks land

The pattern repeats most years. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring travel surges for airlines and airports, and long queues at co-ops and delivery counters. National Day and Liberation Day at the end of February bring events, crowds and security demands. Summer brings the largest travel wave, school holidays, and heat that slows outdoor work. December brings year-end stock counts in retail and warehouses, and Ramadan reshapes the whole day for hospitals and ministries.

Why rosters tighten before a peak

Peaks are rarely caused by more work alone. They are caused by more work and fewer staff, because leave requests cluster in the same weeks. In a hospital, the summer exodus of annual leave leaves a ward short exactly when cover is hardest to find. In an airline, the travel peak arrives when half the team wants time off. Supervisors then restrict leave, extend shifts and cancel rest days, often with little notice.

Protect your leave request early

If you need specific dates, submit the request months ahead, before the freeze is announced. Keep a copy of the request and the approval. Where leave is granted by seniority or rotation, ask early what the rule is, so you are not relying on hope. And avoid trading away approved days for small favours during the peak; those days are hard to get back.

Surviving the extra hours

Plan the recovery, not just the peak

The mistake most people make is planning the peak and not what follows it. Book a real rest day after the busiest block and keep it free, even when someone offers to trade it. If overtime is owed, ask when it will be paid or compensated before the month closes, while the record is fresh and the supervisor still remembers the week.

Peak weeks are exactly when records go missing. Shiftat-E lets you log your shifts and track your hours as you work them, and plan your leave around the weeks you know will be blocked, so the busiest month of the year does not become the month you cannot account for.
