School Traffic and the Morning Shift: A Practical Plan

Shiftat-E Blog

Every September the same thing happens. You leave at the time you left all summer and arrive forty minutes later, wondering where the time went. School starts around 7:15, and between 6:45 and 7:30 the roads around every school turn into a standing queue. This is not a traffic problem you solve once. It is a season you plan for.

Leave earlier than the map says

The map gives you a number, and that number is an average. A school morning is never average. A drive that takes 25 minutes in June can take 60 in September, and the extra 20 to 40 minutes is no mystery: it is the same road, at the same hour, with every parent on it.

Use the estimate as a floor, not a promise. Whatever the app says, add 20 minutes between September and May. If it says 25, plan for 45. And leave before 6:45 rather than 7:00, because that half hour at the start buys a quarter hour on the road.

Track what your commute really costs

Most people run on feel and find after a month they have no idea how long the drive takes. Log one week: out of the door, at the gate, and the route you used. The gap between a 6:50 exit and a 7:05 exit is not 15 minutes; it is usually 25, because the second one lands inside the school window.

Log your shift hours with the same care. The half hour you leave early every day does not disappear, it stacks up, and you need to see it next to your other hours. This is where Shiftat-E helps: you log your shifts and hours and plan your leave in one place instead of rebuilding the week from memory.

Negotiate fifteen minutes, and carpool

Plenty of supervisors will say yes to fifteen minutes if you ask once, clearly, and after thinking about coverage. Do not ask to arrive late. Ask to start at 7:15 and finish fifteen minutes later. Same hours, one small shift in timing. Check your contract and HR first, because official start times are usually written down.

A flexible start only works if it does not weaken coverage: if you receive handover, name who covers those fifteen minutes first.

If a colleague lives near you, alternate driving. You halve the road time and the fuel, and you leave at a fixed time instead of waiting at the door.

Handover, then the checklist

The real cost of arriving late is handover, not the ten minutes. The person you relieve has already been standing for eight hours, and the notes get compressed into ninety seconds at the door: what happened, what is still open, what needs watching. Late arrivals lose that information first, and it is usually the part that matters. Logging your arrival against the shift in Shiftat-E shows you when the delay was the road and when it was you.

That is the plan: leave early, know your real number, and agree the flexibility before you need it. Download Shiftat-E from Google Play and start logging your shifts and hours and planning your leave from the first shift.
