Remind me when my shift ends: useful notifications

Shiftat-E Blog

At the end of a long shift your brain is the least reliable tool you have. You lose track of time, a colleague asks for one more favour, and suddenly you are still standing there half an hour after your shift officially finished. Getting a reminder when your shift ends is not a phone feature you are missing, it is a habit you build yourself with an alarm, a note, and a few people who know your schedule.

The alarm before the shift

Every good reminder starts the night before. If you sleep late and wake up on the last minute, you walk into the shift stressed and unorganised, and every plan after that slips. Set a main alarm well before the shift, a backup alarm fifteen minutes later, and one more for the moment you leave the house.

An alarm for the end of the shift

Do not trust your feeling that the shift is nearly over. Decide the exact end time of your shift and set an alarm for fifteen minutes before it, named something obvious like shift end. If your shift finishes at 11 pm, an alarm at 10:45 gives you time to pack your things, finish handover and walk out calmly instead of realising late that everyone has gone.

It also stops the endless drift where you stay half an hour longer than anyone asked. The alarm tells you your time is up, and that is a perfectly good reason to leave.

A note that never forgets

Write your finish time on a small note or on your phone lock screen: finish 11:00. Paper does not get tired and does not forget, and it works in jobs where phones are not allowed on the floor. A note in your pocket beats a tired memory at the end of a double shift.

Tell the people at home

Your family cannot read your rota. Tell them when you finish today and when you expect to be back, and they will worry less and remind you when something is waiting after work. Anything that comes after your shift, an occasion, a drive, an appointment, is usually remembered by the people at home before it is remembered by you.

Log the shift so you know the real end time

All of this depends on one number: when your shift actually ends. If your shifts and hours are recorded, you know when you started and when you are due to finish, and if the rota changes or overtime creeps in, the record shows the gap between expected and actual hours. Shiftat-E lets you record your shifts and hours and compare expected versus actual hours, so the time you remind yourself about is the real one.

Reminding yourself when your shift ends takes four small things: an alarm, a note, a word with your family, and a clear record of your shifts.
