You finish a shift exhausted, convinced you worked nonstop, then look at the task list: half of it untouched. You are not slow. Your time was split across twenty small interruptions, each one a minute, adding up to two and a half hours of your day. Interruptions do not disappear through good intentions. They disappear through structure.
Before changing anything, log one week. Every time you are pulled off a task, write the time and the reason. Most people are surprised: roughly 60 percent of interruptions are recurring, same people, same causes. What repeats can be handled with a rule. What is random only needs planning.
Pick one short block per shift โ an hour or two โ for work that needs concentration: stock counts, reports, figures, anything that punishes restarting. Announce the block before the shift starts, not during it. When people know in advance, they hold the small requests and respect the block more than you expect.
Most interruptions are small requests that could wait thirty minutes. Agree with colleagues on three fixed check-in points during the shift, or a written list you answer once. Only genuine emergencies break the rule โ and the line between urgent and merely loud becomes clear within a week.
An interruption costs most when you are already lost. Enter the shift with a written list โ three core tasks and two optional โ and you resume in seconds instead of wondering where you were. The list has to be on paper or on screen, not in your head.
Half the interruptions on a night shift exist because the previous shift did not hand over cleanly. A written handover โ what finished, what is pending, what needs follow-up โ removes a large share of the calls and questions that land on you.
This is where Shiftat-E earns its place: you log your shifts and hours and plan your leave in it, so your week is visible and you can see which shifts are heavy and which ones can carry a protected block. Real hours do not lie, and once you see them you know where the time goes.
Do not try to install the whole system tomorrow. Choose one protected block this week and log interruptions for three shifts in Shiftat-E or on a small sheet. Then decide. A small change that survives beats a grand plan you abandon in two days, and ten recovered minutes per shift is a full hour a week.
