Nursing runs on rotation: days, evenings, nights, twelves, and the extra shift someone calls you about. The hours add up fast and the paperwork usually does not keep up. Nurses who get paid correctly for what they worked are not necessarily more assertive about it. They simply keep a record.
Not every hour you work appears on the roster. Track these:
Review the totals weekly, not at month-end. A weekly check catches the gap between your roster and what you actually worked while it can still be corrected, instead of surfacing as a smaller number on a payslip you cannot argue with.
Handover is not optional in nursing. Patient status, medication, notes, and pending tasks all have to transfer. The problem is that handover frequently happens after your shift officially ends. Those are working hours, and if you do not log them they disappear from your record. The practical rule: log the end of handover, not the scheduled end of the shift.
On a busy unit, a ten-minute handover easily becomes thirty. Repeat that across a twenty-day month and you have handed an employer full shifts of unpaid time, one quiet half hour at a time.
Overtime arrives in small increments and disappears the same way. Two months later you cannot reconstruct it from memory. Log it the day it happens: date, hours, and the reason. Then you are having a concrete conversation with the roster manager or HR instead of a debate about impressions. The same rule applies to days off you were called in to work.
Keep the record exportable and consistent: date, shift type, hours. When you do raise a gap, organized numbers win the conversation far more often than a general complaint does.
Annual leave in a clinical unit is a coverage question, not only a personal one:
You should not have to wait for year-end to know your totals. Shiftat-E is built around that idea: log your shifts and hours and plan your leave, so your rotation, extra hours, and leave balance stay visible. Daily logging takes seconds. Reconstructing a full month takes an evening you do not have after a night shift.
