Most night-shift problems do not start on the shift. They start in the six hours before it. A nurse in a Kuwait hospital, a ramp agent at the airport, or a cashier at a co-op can follow the same solid routine and still arrive tired, because one small preparation mistake undoes the rest. These are the ones that cost the most.
If your shift begins at 22:00 and you start preparing at 20:30, you are already behind. Preparation begins in the morning: when you wake, when you eat your main meal, and when you have your last coffee. Treat the day of a night shift as a countdown, not a free day. Aim to eat your main meal four to five hours before the shift and to be dressed and ready with an hour to spare.
Two opposite mistakes are common. Some people sleep five hours in the afternoon and arrive groggy. Others force a full eight hours at 14:00 and wake up slow and disoriented. For a first night, a shorter sleep of 90 minutes to two hours in the late afternoon, on top of a normal night sleep, usually works better. On the second and third nights, extend the daytime sleep as your body adjusts.
Kabsa, machboos or a large takeaway an hour before a night shift makes the first four hours hard. Blood goes to digestion and concentration drops exactly when you need it. Coffee has the opposite problem: it is a tool, not a strategy, and drinking it all night leaves you wired at 06:00 when you need to sleep.
Night traffic in Kuwait is lighter, but not empty. Roadworks on the Sixth Ring Road, a checkpoint, or a dust storm can add twenty minutes without warning. A buffer is not about being early for its own sake; it is about arriving calm instead of arriving stressed. Leave with at least thirty minutes of slack and check the route before you go.
Preparation fails quietly when two people remember the roster differently. Confirm the date, start time, location and any handover requirements the day before, and keep your own record. Shiftat-E lets you log your shifts and hours in one place so the details are not left to memory, and it keeps your leave days visible when you are planning around a night block.
Good preparation is boring and repeatable: a fixed sleep window, a meal earlier in the day, caffeine with a cutoff, and a journey with room to breathe. Download Shiftat-E from Google Play to keep your shifts and hours organised: Google Play.
