Low Iron and Shift Work: Drained Even After Sleeping

Shiftat-E Blog

You sleep seven hours, wake up, and still feel like you are dragging a bag of sand behind you. The coffee does nothing. One flight of stairs leaves you breathing hard. If that sounds familiar and you work shifts, the problem may not be your sleep at all. Low iron is one of the most common reasons shift workers feel flat, and it builds so slowly that people stop noticing.

It is not just tiredness

Low iron shows up in small ways that everyone blames on long hours:

None of these alone means anaemia. Together, week after week, they are worth a blood test.

Why shift work drains iron

Shift work is a machine for skipping meals. You wake at 2pm and eat whatever is fastest. You work through the dinner hour, then eat one heavy meal at 2am because it is the only real food you have had. Red meat and lentils take time to cook, so they drop out of the week first.

Then there is the tea. Karak and coffee with every meal taste normal here, but tannins in tea and coffee bind iron in the gut and carry it out. The same cup that gets you through a night shift quietly lowers what you absorb from the food on the plate.

This is where Shiftat-E helps: it records your shifts, hours, overtime and planned leave, so you can see the real weight of your week and find the days that could hold a proper meal and a clinic visit.

Food that actually carries iron

Iron from meat absorbs best: red meat, liver, chicken thigh. Plant iron needs more help: lentils, chickpeas, foul, spinach, molasses, dates, and fortified cereal. A plate of lentils is not a poor substitute for meat โ€” it is a serious iron meal.

Lemon on the plate, tea two hours later

Vitamin C pulls plant iron into the body. Squeeze lemon over lentils, eat an orange after lunch, put tomato next to the liver. And keep tea and coffee one to two hours away from your iron meal, not poured over it.

Blood test first, pills only if the doctor says

Do not buy iron tablets because a colleague said they fixed her. Too much iron is harmful โ€” it collects in the liver and the heart, and it is not something to take on a guess. A blood test shows whether your iron is low and how low. The doctor decides what you need. This article is not a diagnosis.

If you are running on empty shift after shift, start with the test, then build the meals around your roster. Shiftat-E on Google Play keeps the shifts, hours, overtime and planned leave in one place, so a clinic appointment and a cooked meal can fit somewhere real.
