Logging a Shift You Forgot to Record: A Simple Fix

Shiftat-E Blog

It Happens. The Delay Is the Problem.

You finish a long shift, get home, eat, and sleep. The next morning you notice the shift was never recorded. That is normal. The real issue is waiting weeks, because details fade fast and you end up guessing numbers.

So write it down as soon as you remember. Rough numbers beat blank days, and you can correct them later.

Where to Find the Details

Before you type any number, collect every source that can jog your memory. Most shift workers have more paper trail than they think, and it is usually enough to rebuild a day accurately.

When two sources agree, your numbers are solid enough to enter. This is where the app fits: Shiftat-E is built so you can record shifts and hours as they happen, rather than stacking them up.

How to Document It Accurately

Start with the date. Then add the start time and end time, and count only actual working time if your system deducts breaks. Label the shift type: morning, evening, night, or overtime.

If the minutes are unclear, enter whole hours and note that the figure is approximate. Write a short note on the shift too. A note reminds you a month later exactly what happened, whether it was a swap, an emergency, or extra work.

Do not wait until the end of the month to enter everything at once. A batch of twenty shifts means twenty fuzzy guesses. Logging three or four while the memory is fresh is far more reliable, and it takes less time overall.

Why Delaying Breaks Your Monthly Totals

When you log late, you log from memory. Miss one hour per shift and you finish the month short by a full working day or more. Overtime suffers the same way, because unrecorded hours are unpaid hours.

A gap in your record also makes leave planning useless. You cannot budget your days off when you do not know how many hours you actually worked.

A Two-Minute Habit That Fixes Everything

Spend two minutes at the end of every shift entering your hours. Treat it like part of the shift, not extra admin. If you slip, use payslip day as a catch-up session.

Try logging every shift on the same day for one week and watch how much easier your totals become. The app is still in early launch and evolving with user feedback, so send suggestions if something would help you log faster.
