In shift work, "leave" and "off day" both mean you are not working, which is why people mix them up. Annual leave is a balance you earn and draw down, while an off day belongs to your rotation, not your entitlement. Confuse the two and you spend leave you never took, or end the year with a balance that does not add up.
Annual leave accumulates as an entitlement and you draw on it when you take time off. Off days are the rest days built into your pattern: four on, four off, or a week of shifts then a week off. In Gulf rotations they are not a bonus, they are part of the roster design, and treating them as leave is why many shift workers think they earn fewer leave days than they do.
Leave is counted day by day: a week of annual leave takes seven days off your balance, no more. An off day takes nothing off, because it was never a scheduled working day. On the payslip, leave is paid entitlement while an off day never appeared on your timesheet as work. Your shift log is where that distinction lives.
A rotating roster removes the anchor most people rely on: the weekend. When Saturday is an ordinary working day and Tuesday is your rest day, every day without a shift starts to feel like leave. Shift swaps make it worse, because a swap can move your off day or place an extra shift on a day you planned to be off. That overtime on a rest day must be logged as overtime, not as leave.
The fix is simple: give every day a clear type in your record, so this one reads as leave and that one as an off day. Shiftat-E keeps the two apart: log shifts and worked hours, track overtime, plan leave, see weekly and monthly hour totals, and edit the log when an entry was wrong. Then take ten minutes a month to check what leave you really took and how many off days fell in that month.
Planning is the other half. Request leave once you can see the cycle ahead, and if a block of off days sits next to your leave dates you get a long stretch of rest for fewer days of balance. Starting a trip? Begin leave on the first working day after your off block, not in the middle of it, or you burn paid leave on days you would have had anyway.
