Leave Balance After Months of Shifts

Shiftat-E Blog

Six months into a rotating roster, most people cannot answer a simple question: how many annual leave days do I actually have left? The answer is not in your memory, and it is rarely in the group chat where last month's rota was posted. It is in a small calculation you can do in ten minutes.

Start with two numbers, not a feeling

You need two figures: your yearly entitlement and the date your leave year begins. The entitlement is written in your contract or the HR handbook, and in Kuwait it is commonly thirty days for many employees, but read your own paper instead of assuming. The start date matters just as much, because the balance resets on that date, not on 1 January and not on your hiring anniversary unless the policy says so.

The accrual math in plain language

Leave builds up month by month. If you get thirty days a year, that is two and a half days for every completed month of work. Four months gives you ten days. Seven months gives you seventeen and a half. You do not need a spreadsheet, only the number of completed months since your leave year started, multiplied by the monthly rate.

The trap is partial months. Join on the 18th and that month may count as a fraction or not at all, depending on the policy. Ask HR once, write the answer down, and stop re-guessing it every time you want a holiday.

Where balances quietly go wrong

Three things eat days without anyone noticing.

The ten-minute monthly check

Pick one fixed day a month, ideally the day the new roster lands, and do four things in order.

Ten minutes a month is cheaper than discovering in December that you have four days left when you planned for twelve, and it gives you something to show if the numbers ever disagree.

Why your own log beats memory

Rotating shifts are built to confuse recall. Monday is not Monday, your week off moves, and a night shift that ends at seven in the morning belongs to a day you would not naturally count. When you log each shift as it happens, with hours and leave days, the balance stops being a guess. Shiftat-E was made for this: logging shifts, hours and leave in one place so the numbers are yours rather than a reconstruction.
