Your leave balance comes down to one line: what you earned minus what you took. That sounds simple. With shift work it rarely is. Your working days move every week, your leave year may not start in January, and days disappear from your balance without you noticing. Here is how the number is actually built.
Most employers accrue leave month by month or year by year. In Kuwait and across the Gulf, 30 days a year is the common baseline, which works out to 2.5 days for every month of service.
Six months of service earns you 15 days, not 30. Leave after four months and you are owed 10. Mixing up the yearly entitlement printed in your contract with what you have actually accrued is the first mistake people make.
A standard employee takes one day off and loses one day of balance. A shift worker often does not. If your shift runs 12 hours, one day of leave can consume a full shift under your employer's policy.
This is where employers differ. Some deduct one calendar day per day of leave. Others deduct by shift hours. The same leave day can cost you 12 hours at one company and 8 at another, so read the leave clause in your contract twice.
Shift patterns change the count too. A month with 26 shifts is not the same as a month with 22. If you track your balance in shifts rather than days, be clear about which unit your employer uses.
Emergency leave, unpaid sick days and accumulated lateness all pull the number down. Public holidays or shutdowns that land on your scheduled shift can do the same, depending on your employer's rules.
Check your payslip or leave statement every month against your own count. Small gaps grow over a year. Ask HR about any line you do not understand before you need the answer, not afterwards.
Write down your start date, your annual entitlement and the days you have already used. Each time you request leave, note the date and the number of days. You end up with a reference you can check at any time.
