Tracking Hours Across Two Jobs: Keep One Clean Log

Many shift workers in Kuwait and across the Gulf hold two jobs at once: a fixed morning job plus an evening or weekend job. The hard part is not the work itself, it is knowing how many hours you actually worked. When two schedules blur together, overtime gets lost and you have nothing solid to show if there is a dispute.

One clean log for two employers

Keep a single log, not one notebook per job. For every day write the date, the employer, the start time, the end time, and the agreed rate. One page covering both jobs takes two minutes and ends the guesswork.

Hourly pay vs monthly salary

Your two jobs rarely use the same contract. One pays a fixed monthly salary, the other pays by the hour. Do not merge them into one number, keep them separate:

• Monthly job: record the fixed salary as it is, and convert it to hours only for comparison.
• Hourly job: multiply real hours by the rate, for example 40 hours x KD 2.500 = KD 100.
• Write the exact rate, because a KD 0.250 difference per hour adds up fast over a month.
• Keep a separate line for overtime so it never hides inside the total.

Overtime across two schedules

Overtime usually pays a different rate, so log it on its own line with its own date. Two extra hours after an evening shift are overtime, not ordinary hours. This detail is what you rely on in any conversation about pay.

Avoiding double-counting

The most common mistake is counting the same hour twice. It happens when one shift runs into another, or when you add travel time between locations. Travel time is not work time, and one hour cannot be sold to two employers.

Before you log an hour, ask one question: is this hour worked for a single employer only? If not, it stays out of the total.

Reviewing hours at month end

Set aside ten minutes on the last day of the month for a short review:

• Add up the hours for each job separately.
• Compare the totals with your payslip or payment receipt.
• Check overtime first, it is the easiest thing to forget.
• Review every day where both jobs were worked.
• Raise missing hours the same week, not two months later.

Sleep between jobs
