If your shift ends at 8 p.m. and the next one starts at 4 a.m., you have 8 hours. On paper that sounds like enough. In practice the number is a lie, and losing an hour of it shows up at the worst moment: halfway through the second shift, not at the start.
Eight hours is not eight hours of sleep. Take out the following first:
You are left with 5 to 6 hours of real sleep. That is workable, but only if you stop spending the difference on your phone in bed.
If you have kids or a shopping run after the shift, the maths collapses. Eight hours becomes four, and the answer is not more patience. It is a different shift pattern, or a swap with a colleague.
Every decision you make while exhausted takes twice as long. Put the work bag, the clothes and the food out before you walk into the bedroom. Even breakfast goes in the fridge, ready to grab. You will not have the brain for it later.
Log your hours in Shiftat-E before you sleep, even if it takes a minute. You can do that while you are still awake. You cannot do it once the tiredness lands.
Dark and cool is not a comfort thing, it is the fastest route to sleep in the middle of the day. Close the curtains properly, set the AC to 22-23, and keep the phone out of reach. Light tells your body it is time to work, which is the last message you need.
Do not get into bed starving or stuffed. A light bite half an hour before is far better than a big meal, and the coffee you drink after your shift comes straight out of your sleep.
If you wake up halfway through, do not turn on a light and do not check your phone. Close your eyes again. Your body will finish the job if you stop interrupting it.
In an 8 hour turnaround, every postponed task buys you minutes of sleep. Postpone the laundry, the errands and the long calls. Do not postpone eating, drinking or the shower, because you pay for those in the middle of the shift, when you cannot leave.
The harder call: if you are doing this three days in a row, day three has no clever fix. That is when you talk to your manager or swap a shift, because accumulated sleep debt is not something a cup of coffee covers.
And if the pattern repeats every week, plan your leave with Shiftat-E so you break it with a real rest day instead of a day of errands that leaves you more tired than before.
Eight hours is enough if you do the maths and set it up in advance. Real sleep is 5 to 6 hours, so protect every one of them. Download it on Google Play and start logging your shifts today.
