Your coworker ended their shift and walked out without handing over properly. Maybe they left a task half-finished, maybe the notes are missing, maybe nobody told you the status of anything. First, take a breath. You cannot change what they did, but you can control how you respond and make sure the record shows exactly what happened.
Bad handovers happen in every sector, especially in Kuwait's refinery, hospital, airport and security rotas where shifts turn over around the clock. Good shifts handle it the same way: stay calm, write things down, and get the missing information without turning it into a fight.
Do not trust memory. Memory fades fast after a long night, and vague stories never convince a manager. As soon as you take over, start a running log and keep adding to it during the whole shift.
A clean log protects you. If a manager later asks why something was late, you have real times and real notes instead of a memory you are not sure about.
Message your coworker kindly, not with an accusation. Keep it short and specific, and ask one clear question at a time. For example: "I took over and I could not find the status of the client file. Can you send me the details when you get a chance?" Use a written channel so there is an answer you can point to later. If they do not reply, do not chase them all night. Send one polite follow-up and move on with your work.
Escalating is not snitching. It is protecting the shift. Tell your supervisor early if the missing handover affects safety, money, customers or a deadline. Report facts, not feelings: what was missing, when you noticed it, and what you did about it. Describe the gap, not the person. Keep your tone neutral and let the record do the talking.
You are not responsible for work you never received. Do not quietly absorb their tasks and then get blamed when they run late. Write clearly in your log that the task was already pending when you arrived, and tell your supervisor what you can and cannot finish today. Before your own shift ends, hand over your work fully so the next person is never stuck in your position.
Shiftat-E is a free Android app made for shift workers in Kuwait and the Gulf. You can use Shiftat-E for logging shifts, tracking hours and notes, and planning leave, so your own record stays clean and ready whenever anyone asks.
The coworker who skipped the handover may have been exhausted or rushing, not careless. Treat them with respect while keeping your own record tight. That way you protect yourself, keep the work running, and hold the team together without a single raised voice.
