Two workers, same roster, same 12-hour shifts, same four-on four-off pattern, same number of nights. One ends the month with 26 days of leave balance, the other with 19. The difference is not luck or law โ it is arithmetic: one employer counts in days, the other in hours, and the two methods do not land on the same number.
Counting in days: every shift you work, whatever its length, is one day. A 12-hour shift is 1 day. A 4-hour shift is also 1 day. An extra shift on a rest day is 1 day, full stop. It is simple, matches most rosters, and is how most people think about the month.
Counting in hours: the unit is the hour. A 12-hour shift equals one day only if your standard day is 12 hours. If your standard day is 8 hours, that same shift is 1.5 days. And four 3-hour shifts add up to 12 hours โ one day-equivalent, not four days.
Run it over a month. Ten 12-hour shifts under day-counting is 10 days. Under hour-counting with an 8-hour standard day it is 120 divided by 8, so 15 day-equivalents. The gap is five days. A short-shift roster swings the other way: eight 3-hour shifts are 24 hours, which is 3 day-equivalents but 8 days if a day is simply a day.
To convert: total your real hours for the month, divide by the standard day in your contract, and compare with the days payroll deducted. If the clause is silent or vague, do not guess โ check your contract and HR, in writing, and keep the reply. Recording the clause beside your hours turns worry into a calculation; Shiftat-E holds both, so you log your shifts and hours, and plan your leave, with the comparison ready.
Log what you actually worked, in hours, always โ even when your employer counts in days. Hours are the raw material; days are a conversion someone else performs. Keep only the converted number and you lose the ability to redo the maths under another rule โ exactly what you need when a dispute starts.
At month end, open Shiftat-E, put the log beside the payslip and do the division once. Ten minutes beats an evening rebuilding a Friday in March from chat messages. Then take numbers, not frustration, to your supervisor.
